Perry is the son of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry, a director. Her first television roles were two times on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. However, her parents did not permit her to perform until she was an adult, for fear of the effects stress would have on their child. Perry was shy throughout high school and did not act. The actress began her acting career at Northwestern University to gain friends when she transferred from Boston University. Perry started her acting career at New York after graduation, performing in minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry return to California and pursue a career as a theatre actress. Her mother and she starred on Broadway as a couple for the play The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie with the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. In 2017, she played a recurring role on the ABC political thriller Scandal which starred her father. The actress was also featured on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. She was able to be cast in the part despite the close familial connection to the character.
